December 22, 1923 – March 3, 2024
Tony Colobro, 100, passed away on Sunday, March, 3, 2024 at Dogwood Senior Living Center. Tony was a loving father and proud grandfather. He will be remembered for his love of family as well as the football families of Welch High School, Bluefield State University, and Concord University. Tony was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Pauline, and son, Frank Colobro.
Survivors include, daughter, Susan Maupin (Ray); sons, Nick Colobro (Carol) and Tony Colobro II; grandchildren, Mickey Maupin, Kristy McCoy, Anthony Colobro, Nicky Colobro, Courtney Colobro, Holly Disibbio and Krystal Colunga; nine great grandchildren; and nieces, Anna Mercanti, Bernadina Colobro and Anna Marie Scatena.
After serving as an Army surgical technician with 103rd infantry division, he completed his education at West Virginia University and began a long and successful career as a teacher and football coach. His career began at Iaeger High School, followed by Welch High School, Bluefield State University and ended at Concord University where he lead their football teams to numerous conference and championship games. Tony was a member of five football Hall of Fames as well as being inducted in 1985 to the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame.
"Coach" had a tremendous impact upon the many players he coached and taught, he was loved and respected by his players and maintained close contacts with many of them throughout the years.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 7, 2024 beginning at 9:00AM in Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM with Father Sebastian officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be family and former players. Honorary pallbearers will be all former coaches and players.
A football scholarship will be established in Tony's name. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to: Concord University Foundation, memo line to read "Coach Tony Colobro" PO Box 1405, Athens, WV 24712.
The family would also like thank Dogwood Crossing Senior Living and MSA Hospice nurses for the loving care they provided.
Roselawn Funeral Home will be caring for the Colobro family.
