IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry R.
Durgan
April 1, 1949 – December 25, 2024
Larry Romanus Durgan, affectionately known as "Dobbie" and "Pops" fell asleep peacefully on Wednesday, December 25, 2024. Larry was born to the late Dorothy Mary Durgan and Massy Williams on April 1, 1949, in Lillybrook, West Virginia. Larry moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with his mother and his bonus dad, Chap Goins in 1960. He was educated in the Cincinnati public school system attending Samuel Ach High School in Avondale.
Larry was determined to be the strong one throughout his life right down to the end. But, like many young ones trying to navigate their way through adulthood, he found himself faced with a few challenging situations growing up and had to learn firsthand what the hard knocks of life would offer. Despite many challenges, they never dampened his love for people and an incredible ability to recite scriptures from God's word, the Bible.
Larry left Cincinnati and returned to Bluefield, West Virginia. Determined to put on a new personality, he continued to learn from the Bible what it meant to love God with his whole heart. Soon he cultivated a desire to show his appreciation for what he was learning and dedicated is life to God by water baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
With the love of his life, the late Yvonne Anita Durgan (as he affectionally called "Momma") together they enjoyed a lasting marriage filled with laughter, a mutual love of cooking, their adult children, grands, great grands, great great grands, and their first love, their God Jehovah.
Their love for one another reminded you of Lucy and Desi, with humor like that of Abbott & Costello, and while watching old westerns or solving murder mysteries together, you may have witnessed a little Bonnie and Clyde!
Larry spent his every waking moment caring for "Momma" once she fell ill and forever grateful we all will be! No task was too great and no hour too late to run and get "Momma" a burger from McDonalds! "Ok, Momma, I'm going now!" he'd say. There wasn't a day he didn't say "You know I love your Momma" and like all of us, his heart was broken when his love fell asleep in death on December 7, 2021. Though never without a laugh or a funny story to tell, all could see that Larry's light was a little less bright. He missed "Momma" terribly but kept before him the promise he firmly believed in Acts 25:15 that says, "And I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." He looked forward to the day when "no one would say, I'm sick" and held close to his heart Revelation 21:4 describing a time when soon "death will be no more." He lived the rest of his life holding onto that precious promise.
Larry is preceded in death by his loving wife, Yvonne Anita Durgan and leaves loving memories to be cherished by his bonus daughters; Anita Sawyers (Richard), Melissa Agee, and Angella Martin; daughter, Carla Releford; son, Carlton Durgan; brothers, Mark Goins, Kalvin Goins (Markya); sisters, Brenda Goins and Rose Mary Goins; grandchildren, Kala Leak (Sean), Faith Bushnell (Jalen), Jade Martin, Ethan Martin (Makayla), Jesica Smith, Brittany Miles, Randy Arnold, Richard Alexander Sawyers, Jr., Sydney Releford, Brenden Releford, Christian Releford, Zakia Dover, Kennedy Releford, Paul Releford, and Victoria Releford; Great Grandchildren, Sidarius and Shawnice Andrews, Chai Leak, Keontay Wilborn, Alexandria Mullins, Dezmond Deion, and Devon Earnest, Eliona and Aryiah Carr, Kyson Arnold; Great Great Grandchildren, Talia Wilborn, Kyndell Leak, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest and sincere appreciation for all the love, acts of kindness, and support shown to them during this most difficult time.
Thank you for sharing this day with us as we continue to look forward to a future free of sickness and death.
May we all "Hope in Jehovah; Be courageous and strong of heart. Yes, hope in Jehovah." (Psalm 146:5)
