Obituary

Born November 8, 1938, in Matoaka, WV. Betty passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 86 following a sudden illness at Glenwood Healthcare. She was the beloved daughter of the late Ted and Vesta Hamm of Matoaka, WV.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters. She is survived by her two brothers, Glen Hamm and Donald Hamm; three children, Wade "Lennie" Cress, Tresa Ann Yow, and Lisa Lynn Colobro Walker; grandchildren Chad Johnson, Amber Spence, Matthew Walker, Steven Walker, Katelyn Walker, and Christopher Dolan; and great-grandchildren JD Reed and Xander Reed.

Betty began her career at the age of 18 at Cannon Mills in Princeton, WV, and later worked at Hills Department Store where she quickly moved up and helped open various new stores through the state. After leaving Hills she worked at the Methodist Senior Center in Matoaka where she helped prepare meals and feed the communtiy . While raising her three children as a single mother, she earned her LPN license and dedicated 32 years of service to Bluefield Regional Medical Center, where she touched countless lives of patients, familes and coworkers with her compassionate care. She was a friend to everyone she met. Her co-workers often spoke of her sense of humor and work ethic. After retirement, she continued her legacy of giving by volunteering as a grandparent at the Salvation Army, lovingly caring for the babies entrusted to her.

Betty was a woman of unwavering faith and devoted her life to God. She was a member of the Hamm Quartet, traveling to share the message of God's love through song. Her vibrant faith and kindness were evident in her every action, and she found immense joy in telling others about God's love and forgiveness.

She was happiest when outdoors, whether camping or sitting on her porch, chatting with friends, neighbors, and family. Betty enjoyed reading, dining at Dolly's Diner, and taking country drives, especially to Mary Branch, the place of her birth and upbringing. Known for her unparalleled sense of humor, infectious laugh, and generous heart, Betty's love for her family and God defined her life.

Her passing will leave a void in the hearts of those her loved her. She will be deeply missed and remembered daily.

Family will receive friends Monday, January 13, 2025 at Roselawn Funeral Home from 12:00PM-1:00PM. A celebration of Betty's life will begin at 1:00PM with Partor Laurel Farmer officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
